9:00pm | Nobody (2012)
I have not seen this acclaimed action movie yet. An underappreciated "nobody" of the suburban dad variety is pushed to his breaking point after some low-level thugs burgle his family and home. Bob Odenkirk as an action hero by the writer of John Wick? Yep, gimme! Perhaps some sleeper agent conspiracy level stuff? I hope so! Youtube iceberg rabbithole about MK Ultra after the movie? Maybe!
Starring: Bob Odenkirk, Aleksey Serebryakov, Connie Nielsen, Christopher Lloyd, RZA
June 28th
9:00pm | 21 Jump Street (2012)
Two fuckups on the police force are relegated to undercover work at a high school to bring down a drug ring. This remake of the original (much more serious) 80s TV show with Johnny Depp is just an absolute riot as they turn the raunchy buddy comedy up all the way and let these two leads play off each other perfectly. It ain't family friendly, but it's a whole lotta fun!
Starring: Jonah Hill, Channing Tatum, Ice Cube, Brie Larson, Dave Franco, Rob Riggle, Ellie Kemper, Nick Offerman
June 27th
9:00pm | Mortal Kombat (2021)
You know the story! Earthly MMA champions must battle the enemies of Outworld in a tournament to the death! But unlike the the 1995 movie (a decent enough offering in the world of game-to-movie) this one has a rated R advantage, and some actually kick-ass choreography. Fans of the franchise will also notice no small amount of inside jokes and nods amidst the awesome special effects and a just-right amount of story/characters. But even if you've never played the game, this non-stop action for the fun of it movie will satisify your Martial Arts Monday bloodlust!
Starring: Lewis Tan, Jessica McNamee, Josh Lawson, Mehcad Brooks
June 26th
9:00pm | The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy (2005)
The only feature movie made (the british miniseries was arguably superior) from the widely beloved book series by Douglas Adams. It's not prefect, but it's still a lot of fun and faithful to the book in so far as they could smush as much as possible into a stand-alone experience. Lots of funny one-liners, goofy aliens, absurd situations, Zooey at her peak big-eyed zooeyness, and of course you can't go wrong with Martin Freeman. It's a jolly good time!
Starring: Martin Freeman, Sam Rockwell, Zooey Deschanel, Yaslin Bey, John Malkovich, Helen Mirren, Stephen Fry, Warwick Davis
June 25th
9:00pm | Kingsman: The Secret Service (2014)
I've been wanting to get this series into the lineup for a while, but kept holding off cuz of current events... Unfortunately, it's obvious we won't be seeing a break in these events in the US anytime soon, so it seems pointless to be sensitive about it. Anyway, there is an infamous church shooting scene in this (against baddies, but still) played for cartoonish violence. Just FYI. In fact this whole movie uses the comedic ultra-violent style you're familiar with from Kick-Ass and Guy Ritchie films (with whom director Matthew Vaughn frequently collabs). It's hilarious. It's not a spy spoof. It's a legit spy action movie. But it's like if a Bond movie was made by stuntmen hopped up on whippets and Four Loco with unlimited budget and bullets.
Starring: Taron Egerton, Colin Firth, Sam Jackson, Michael Caine, Mark Strong, Sophia Boutella, Mark Hamill
June 24th
11:00pm | Paranormal Activity (2007)
Ahh the most found footage-ist of found footage style movies besides the orginator, Blair Witch! This one was unique though in that most of the shots are stationary so you won't get that FF motion-sickness or the impression you're on some 4D space ride in the middle of the mall. In fact this movie, which spawned a plethora of pretty meh sequels, endless bad impersonators, and probably about a third of what youtube content would become, is almost entirely atmospheric in its horrorscape. No gore, no psycho killer, just a few bumps in the night. Or is it? It's the Friday Night Midnight Movie!
Starring: Katie Featherston, Micah Sloat
June 23rd
9:00pm | O Brother, Where Art Thou (2000)
One of the greatest movies ever! And why not, it's based on one of the oldest living stories, Homer's The Odyssey. Three inmates in the 1930s american south spring from a chain gang and set off on an adventure where they encounter a cyclops, sirens, a charismatic criminal, the KKK, the music industry, and more! This is an absolute classic you don't wanna miss. It's hilarious, it's beautiful... it's bona fide!
Starring: Cloondog, John Turturro, Tim Blake Nelson, John Goodman, Holly Hunter
June 22nd
9:00pm | The Mask (1994)
So this was definitely my favorite movie for several years of my life. No comment on if those are up to and including the current. It's got a LOT going for it from the all-in Carrey-palooza to the SFX which actually still hold up. They somehow managed to balance the absolute crazy with subtle design. Short synopsis: mild-mannered bank clerk Stanley puts on a sussy ancient mask and gets transformed into a manic, super-powered anti-hero with only the best one-liners and a turbo boner that definitely warrants a call to your doctor. He's not a superhero. He's just looking for a good time! Awesome soundtrack, Jim Carrey turned up to 11, classic cartoon wild takes, Cameron AWOOGA Diaz, and funny fun for all!
Starring: Jim Carrey, Cameron Diaz
June 21st
9:00pm | Ocean's Thirteen (2007)
We heistin'! The boys are back and ready to relieve you, Al Pacino, of all your ill-gotten gains. There's probably a story in this somewhere, but let's be honest, we're here for the handsome suits, expensive faces, twists, double-crosses, and ridiculously complicated plans that are too big to fail! Is the girl one all that's left in this series after this? Is Now You See Me in this universe? I switched your briefcase for a dummy briefcase while we were talking. HaHa!
Starring: George, Brad, Matt, Al, Elliot, Don, Bernie, Scott Caaaan
June 20th
9:00pm | Kung Fu Hustle (2004)
It's Martial Arts Monday! This is hands-down the funniest kickpunchin' movie ever made! And it's up there for one of the best overall. I really don't know how to describe Stephen Chow's style if you're unfamiliar. This movie is like... Gangs of New York meets Crouching Tiger meets Three Stooges. It's a real trip. And it's amazing! Awesome kung fu, hilarious characters, a synchronized dancing hatchet gang, dumplings, and more!
Starring: Stephen Chow, Wah Yuen, Qiu Yuen
June 19th
9:00pm | Mrs. Doubtfire (1993)
Happy Father's Day! Celebrate with this classic comedy about an amazing, caring dad who will do anything to avoid being a deadbeat, including oldlady drag! His family is actually kinda awful though now that I think about it... And man does his ex-wife move on pretty quick with ol' Handsome McBrosnanface after the divorce. Are we sure there wasn't something going on before? Cuz the birthday party incident isn't even all that bad. Is this a tragedy? Man the Men's Rights Movement used to be so much more wholesome back then. J/k this is a really funny movie, iconic Williams role, awesome Columbus direction, all-around comedy gold. Plus a Lawrence brother!
Starring: Robin Williams, Sally Field, Pierce Brosnan, Matthew Lawrence, Lisa Jakub, Mara Wilson
June 18th
9:00pm | Enemy of the State (1998)
I've been wanting to rewatch this for a while, and now seems like as good a time as any. A lawyer gets caught up in a three-letter agency espionage affair when the tape of a state-sanctioned murder is planted on him. Here's what I will go ahead and presume even after 20+ years, the day after September tenth, The [redacted] Act, the ***'s open domestic surveilance protection, and Will Smith's Oscar-winning Slap... this Tony Scott movie will still hold up and then some! And keep your HACKERMANS handy, cuz I have a feeling... We're in.
Starring: Will Smith, Gene Hackman, Jon Voight, Lisa Bonet, Gabriel Byrne, Jason Lee
June 17th
11:00pm | Intruder (1989)
Sorta capping off the 80s slasher horror genre is this strangely unseen supermarket pyscho movie. Evil Dead regs are all involved (though don't get your hopes up cuz of the top-billing, BC is only in this for a hot cameo minute), and it's a great production, high-camp gore fest. But maybe its lack of appreciation just says something about the end of that particular era of movie-making. After all, it IS the 90s now, and we should put away our fantastic toys and practical effects in favor of CGI blue lightning bolts in everything from action to horror and sci-fi, and never stop doing that ever! Right? It's the Friday Night Midnight Movie! Join for fun!
Starring: Elizabeth Cox, Renee Estevez, Sam Raimi, Ted Raimi, Bruce Campbell
June 16th
9:00pm | Office Space (1999)
Ahhh the source of nearly every joke ever made since it came out in 1999! Not only is this Mike Judge feature debut a timelessly relevant satire on cubicle work culture, it's quite possibly one of the funniest movies ever made. I'm talking zero shenanigans here. If you haven't seen this I envy you, and if you have... welp... yeahhhhhhh...... I'm gonna have to ask you to come in and watch anyway... mmmmkay?
Starring: Ron Livingston, Jennifer Aniston, Michael Bolton, Ajay Naidu, Stephen Root, Gary Cole, Diedrich Bader
June 14th
9:00pm | Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues (2013)
Palate cleanser! Okay, that was in bad taste... Jesus... I mean. Shit. Okay lemme start over.
Let's watch a bunch of funnymen do jokes! Nailed it. I love this one almost as much as the first, it definitely isn't the big-budget comedy game-changer that the first one was, but it still delivers the goods with all the major players returning for their hilarious roles. A bit more emphasis on story and characters, but don't worry, it's not like Brick is gonna suddenly be reciting Shakespeare or anything. This is good, clean fun! ...motherfuckers. Goddammit!
Starring: Will Ferrell, Christina Applegate, Paul Rudd, Steve Carell, David Koechner, Fred Willard, Harrison Ford
June 13th
9:00pm | Mother! (2017)
I don't know what to say about this, cuz I haven't seen it yet, but it seems like even more so than Darren Aronofsky's other works this is a love it or hate it affair. A couple's tranquil existence is disrupted by unexpected guests. That's all I know. Be sure there is some horror elements, whether they're purely psychological or not we will have to see! It's Marital Arts Monday!
Starring: Jennifer Lawrence, Javier Bardem, Ed Harris, Michelle Pfeiffer
June 12th
9:00pm | You Don't Mess with the Zohan (2008)
I don't care what anybody says, this is one of my favorite Sandler movies. It's incredibly stupid, juvenile, and probably offensive to every culture it touches... and it's also really really funny! Zohan is a sorta superhuman middle-eastern Bond who faked his death in order to pursue his dream of being a hair stylist in New York. I'm not positive this movie could completely resolve the Israeli/Palistinian conflict, but I'm just saying, has anybody actually tried it yet?
Starring: Adam Sandler, John Turturro, Emmanuelle Chriqui, Dave Matthews, Kevin Nealon, Rob Schneider
June 11th
9:00pm | No Time to Die (2021)
This just came on Amazon and I haven't seen it yet, so why not? Well, apparently cuz it's hot, woke garbage according to the brigade in the IMDB reviews.. sheeesh! Don't go in there. Overall it's still very highly rated, so we'll try not to get into the politics of it and just enjoy the action... hopefully. I've thoroughly enjoyed the Daniel Craig bonds myself, and since this is the last one, let's send him off with some proper KaBOOMs!
Starring: Daniel Craig, Ana de Armas, Rami Malek, Ralph Fiennes, Lea Seydoux, Jeffrey Wright, Christoph Waltz
June 10th
11:00pm | The Wolf of Snow Hollow (2020)
Jim Cummings is an interesting filmmaker, writing, directing, and starring in all three of his feature length films so far and coming up through about all the aspects of cast and crew and studio. I honestly wouldn't be surprised if you told me designed his own poster art and was out there plastering posters on bus stop walls himself too. On top of all that, his ideas are original and the actual execution far above what a jack-of-all-trades should be. Basically what I'm saying is, fuck you, Jim Cummings! Fucking fucker.
It's werewolves, and it's the Friday Night Midnight Movie!!
Starring: Jim Cummings, Riki Lindhome, Robert Forster, Chloe East
June 9th
9:00pm | Wrath of Man (2021)
We're gonna watch this Guy Ritchie movie I haven't seen yet, cuz... well that. It's got Jason Statham and it's about stealing money probably. Is it still heist week? I'm just gonna go out on a limb here and also guess that this won't pass the Bechdel test since there's as many female characters in the cast as the entire LotR series. Maybe since it's heist week(?) we'll watch Ocean's Eight later to make up for it. Who knows!
Starring: Jason Statham, Holt McCallany, Josh Hartnett, Scott Eastwood
June 7th
9:00pm | G.I. Joe: Retaliation (2013)
I'm not sure if there's a story in this. I'm not sure if it really needs one either. This is kinda like a very expensive, grown-up way of playing with dolls. The rules of engagement are unclear, things explode just because, and there's a good chance one of your sister's Barbies somehow made it onto the battlefield without any of the necessary military training for a Joe soldier. Bruce Willis is in this but not in the credits. Walton Goggins is in this and has a vodka. Ray Park is in this and is also Darth Maul.
Starring: The Rock, The Tatum, Adrianne Palicki, Bruce Willis?
June 6th
9:00pm | The Change-Up (2011)
Marital Arts Monday is back! Good ol' fashioned body swap comedy here. Two grown-ass dudes with very different lifestyles do some grass-is-always-greener reflection, pee in a fountain, lightning strikes, and they wake up in each other's bodies ready to live it up and presumably learn some valuable life lessons before gettin' magic-a-roo'ed back. It's a classic formula, but with an R rating and two of the most likeable comedic lead men in Hollywood, you really can't go wrong with this one!
Starring: Ryan Reynolds, Jason Bateman, Olivia Wilde, Leslie Mann
June 5th
9:00pm | Born in East L.A. (1987)
Cheech directs this story about an american citizen deported to Mexico as an illegal alien. While I wouldn't go so far as to call it powerful, it does somehow remain relevant 30 years later in its socio-political message. Also, Cheech on his own tends to branch out a little further in the comedy realm than strictly weed jokes like Chong, not that there's anything wrong with that... Are you ready for a super serious look at the problems of racial stereotyping and immigration reform in post Reagan-era America? Well, look elsewhere, my friend! We're watching Born in East L.A.!
Starring: Cheech Marin, Daniel Stern
June 4th
9:00pm | Shaun of the Dead (2004)
I wanted to show something tonight in honor of The Queen, so I thinks to myself I thinks, "What's a very bri'ish movie we haven't watched?" Well, this is the most aggressively casualUK film I can think of, and it also happens to be one of the greatest comedy-horrors of all time! This one really flips the script on the zombie apocalypse, and gave rise to several well-deserved careers like star Simon Pegg and director Edgar Wright. It's disgusting. It's hilarious. It's a genuinely well-told story about slacker brits killing undeads!
Starring: Simon Pegg, Nick Frost, Kate Ashfield, Lucy Davis
June 3rd
11:00pm | Bubba Ho-Tep (2002)
So... Bruce Campbell is Elvis along with his friend "Black JFK" living in a retirement home. Of course an ancient Egyptian mummy starts stealing the resident old-folks' souls out of their asses, and the two decide to do something about this absolute wutthefuckery dreamed up by writer/director Don Coscarelli. I don't know what else to tell you. It's the Friday Night Midnight Movie!
Starring: Bruce Campbell, Ossie Davis, Bob Ivy
June 2nd
9:00pm | Horns (2013)
This is one of the most original and criminally underseen movies of recent years. It defies any attempt to lock it into a particular genre, spanning horror, romance, mystery, fantasy... French director Alexandre Aja (also responsible for High Tension, Crawl, et al) somehow manages to reign in all these competing styles to create a truly fantastic, and at times gut-wrenching film. Other more pretentious "big-time indie" directors (looking at you LvT) could learn a thing or two from Aja. This is pure entertainment with the invitation to look as deeply into it as you want. Oh, and Radcliffe is AMAZING.
Starring: Daniel Radcliffe, Juno Temple, Max Minghella, Joe Anderson, David Morse, Heather Graham
