September 29th

9:00pm | Zodiac (2007) This David Fincher true crime deep dive into the titular serial killer active in California throughout the 70s is a masterclass in storytelling and cinematic technique. It's also really long and not exactly action-packed with recreations and endless descriptions of the brutal murders, so if that's your thing, maybe listen to like nine hours of any given podcast on the subject, but if handwriting analysis and meticulous attention to period production design are your things... join for those! It's a frustrating true story told brilliantly by a ton of talent.
Starring: Jake Gyllenhaal, RDJ, Mark Ruffalo, Anthony Edwards, Brian Cox

11:30pm Bonus Movie | The Final Cut (2004) In a supposed future (I dunno looked a lot like 2004 to me) where some rich people have memory implants, Alan is a "cutter" that puts together basically In Memoriam bestofs for their funerals. Woof. For a movie literally about editing, this was so poorly directed and paced... and for an idea with some good potential it was bland and lifeless... and with a cast this good, wow what waste of talent. Thumbs down.
Starring: Robin Williams, Jim Caviezel, Mira Sorvino

September 27th

10:00pm | Child's Play (1988) I kinda wanted to get this one in the Tuesday lineup so we can maybe watch some of the later sequels that tend to be a bit more fun. The original is great (aside from the most heinous child acting in the history of cinema), and has its moments (like burnt up Chucky coming back to life and getting his head blown off). But luckily for us in the followups, they learned the lesson to not give the most screentime to a kid, and instead focus on Brad Dourif's Chucky and his shenanigans... well I guess murder isn't really a shenanigan...
Starring: Catherine Hicks, Chris Sarandon, Alex Vincent, Bread Dourif

12:00pm Bonus Movie | Robocop (2014) This was pretty good! I'm surprised it squeaked by me and I guess pretty much everybody else unseen. Honestly it wasn't even really a remake, more of completely different movie with some similiarities like... there's a Robocop in Detroit. Definitely lacked the insightful snark on corporate America that makes the original so fun, but it really seemed like they were going for their own thing. Great action and effects, can't go wrong with some Oldman and Keaton, and felt like a different story in the Robocop-verse. Good flick!
Starring: Joel Kinnaman, Gary Oldman, Michael Keaton, Abbie Cornish, Sam Jackson, Michael Kenneth Williams

September 26th

9:00pm | Armageddon (1998) I was gonna take a break tonight, but how could I really? There is literally no better night to watch this star-studded blockbuster classic disasterpiece! Is our little precision dart as flamboyant as drilling a nuke straight into the center of an incoming asteroid like our team is tasked with in this movie! Nahh, is our little fridge-sized planetary defense bot gonna knock that big guy off its (granted, not at all headed for Earth) track? LOL, I doubt it! Still fun though, and a helluva accomplishment! Join for ridiculous science and emotional manipulation at its finest!
Starring: Bruce Willis, Ben Affleck, Liv Tyler, Billy Bob Thornton, Steve Buscemi, Owen Wilson, MCD, Peter Stomare

11:30pm Bonus Movie | Deep Impact (1998) Twin movie put out in 1998 to siphon some of that sweet sweet Armageddon marketing. We just couldn't get enough of world ending disasters that year! Actually a really good movie, sorta about what if the Drillteam hadn't been successful in Armageddon and the asteroid did hit us. There's some decent special effects and Elijah outrunning a tsunami on a motor sickle, which is fun. But if I can only see one catastrophic disaster film this summer, it's probably gonna be Ben Affleck shoving animal crackers down Liv Tyler's panties. Let's be honest.
Starring: Elijah Wood, Leelee Sobieski, Robert Duvall, Tea Leoni, Morgan Freeman

September 25th

9:00pm | Inherent Vice (2014) This film has an interesting reputation. I've not seen it yet, but I do pretty much trust Paul Thomas Anderson completely. Now that's not to say I'm entirely blind to when he gets a bit pretentious with his films, but there are none that I consider a waste of time by any stretch. That said, I've also tried reading Pynchon... and that has NEVER taken for me. So I can maybe understand why the seemingly overall opinion of this is "incoherent" vice. And it's long. So that's the set up! It's also a hazy 60s period piece classic noir whodunnit... maybe... possibly. Take it away PTA!
Starring: Joaquin Phoenix, Josh Brolin, Owen Wilson, Katherine Waterston, Joanna Newsom, Eric Roberts, Maya Rudolph, Benicio Del Toro

September 24th

10:00pm | Godzilla vs. Kong (2021) So I couldn't remember which of the newer monkey movies we'd already watched. Turns out, none of them yet, aaaaand I ended up with the latest one in the bunch. So pretty much par for the course for us. I can't imagine having to look up the synopsis of this to write a description. I mean... has there ever been a more self-explanatory movie title? Let's watch a giant monkey fight a giant lizard! Who are you rooting for? Kong's a softie if you ask me compared to zilla, but then again lizard-boi does have a flipfloppy reputation over the years. I'll tell you who's not gonna win, whatever city they meet in to duke it out!
Starring: Alexander Skarsgard, Millie Bobby Brown, Rebecca Hall, Brian Tyree Henry

12:00am | The Day After Tomorrow (2004) It's a super ridiculous disaster movie with a way too big budget considering like 90% of it is just dudes walking around in whiteout. But it was also fairly accurate in some climate speculations that we're starting to see now (well ahead of its 100 year prediction), aside from the global supercane that developed out of three megacanes joining forces to smite our silly asses. And the whole switch-a-roo of the border crisis is downright hilarious. Overall, a decent dumb movie!
Starring: Dennis Quaid, Jake Gyllenhaal, Emmy Rossum

September 23rd

11:00pm | The Lawnmower Man (1992) It's the Friday Night Midnight Movie!! This cult favorite has some interesting aspects to say the least. Its marketing at the time was almost completely centered around its special effects which... well let's just say they're still the highlight of the movie, but not for the same reason as in 1992. They even tried to say their graphics were better than T2! I'll let you be the judge. Jeff Fahey, a prominent B-actor plays a "slow" gardener who is gradually, I dunno, "improved"? by science nerd Pierce Brosnan and his science corporation. Jobe eventually becomes a god in VR, and that's a good idea. Though the SFX are laughably fun today, the underlying principles of "virtual" reality's slow creep into actual reality seems closer than ever. But don't take it toooo seriously, some government dudes do jump out of a van and try to shoot a big giant VR head with machine guns.
Starring: Jeff Fahey, Pierce Brosnan, Dean Norris

September 22nd

9:00pm | Con Air (1997) Recently paroled ex-con has to share a flight with lesser paroled current-cons on an inexplicably con-laden plane that somehow ends up getting hijacked. There's a lesson in there somewhere... This batshit action fest has so many great characters chewing the scenery that it's amazing there's anything left to watch. Buckle up! It's gonna be a wild ride!
Starring: Nic Cage, John Cusack, John Malkovich, Colm Meaney, Ving Rhames, Dave Chappelle, Steve Buscemi

11:00pm Bonus Movie | Snake Eyes (1998) This is supposed to be an over-the-top, grand feature of Nic Cagey goodness. Instead, Brian DePalma gets his stinking, sticky fingers all over it and turns out yet another bland incoherent mess of dialog that seems written by a teenager, and a somehow eventless movie that actually centers around THE EVENT - a Las Vegas fight night. It always amazes me how much people drink this guy's kool-aid... even with this cast and this premise he manages to make a boring waste of time. Sadge. Cage's suits are cool though.
Starring: Nic Cage, Gary Sinise, John Heard, Carla Gugino, Stan Shaw

September 20th

9:00pm | Spider-Man: Far From Home (2019) I have NO clue what's going on in this series at this point! The animated one was absolutely amazing, and now we're back to Tom Holland, but apparently there's a bunch of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. it looks like in this one? Probably where investing in the Avengers branch of this universe would have helped, but like I said before, we're doing pure spooderman... with apparently some sidestepping into Venom, which SHOULD have had some spoodermen at least. What was I talking about? Oh yeah, I have no idea what this one's about, but it takes place after Endgame and Spidey is cleaning up some loose ends... I hope Iron Man's in this!! Is Iron Man gonna be in this, guys?! :)
Starring: Tom Holland, Sam Jackson, Jake Gyllenhaal, Marisa Tomei, Jon Favreau, Zendaya

11:00pm Bonus Movie | Venom: Let There Be Carnage (2021) This was fantastic! Just great fun with the ever-hungry for human heads symbiotic backpack Venom, and redheaded serial killer Woody Harrelson's Carnage. Don't believe the low rating on this, it's a fun anti-hero superhero blockbuster with great production and awesome FX!
Starring: Tom Hardy, Woody Harrelson, Michelle Williams, Naomie Harris

September 19th

9:00pm | We're the Millers (2013) It's Marital Arts Monday Baby! Small time pot dealer and suburban everyman David Clark gets shorted on a deal and forced to mule some drugs in from Mexico. In order to better his odds at the border, he enlists the help of his stripper neighbor and some local teen degens to act as a happy family on vacation. This is a surprisingly funny comedy of errors style goofemup. Well, it's not that surprising considering the talent involved, just kinda flew under the radar I guess. Director Rawson Marshall Thurber you may remember from Dodgeball, but I'm also a big fan of Central Intelligence and Skyscraper. And yeah we've got the unrated version that's sure to hang some dong!
Starring: Jason Sudekeikis, Jennifer Aniston, Emma Roberts, Will Poulter, Ed Helms, Nick Offerman, Kathryn Hahn, Ken Marino

11:00pm Bonus Movie | True Lies (1994) Super secret spy guy hides his spy life from his regular wife, 'till she starts having a secret life with a fake spy... James Cameron finds time to direct this in between T2 and Titanic, and it's a ton of fun! Downhill ski-gun fights, Herrier Jet missile launching terrorist explosions, Bill Paxton making water in his pants several times, oh yeah, and the 45 year old Jamie Lee Curtis doing one of the hottest movie strip teases of all time! It's a lot of fun, never takes itself too seriously, but packs a lot of great 90s action.
Starring: Arnie, JLC, Tom Arnold, Bill Paxton, Tia Carrere

1:30am BBM | The Joneses (2009) Sort of a comedy, sort of a family drama, sort of a weird prophetic vision of the future that would become IRL "influencers". A very well-made, and engrossing movie that defies genre. Interesting and kinda creepy how it all came true in almost real-time as the credit scene rolled and more "families" were rolled out like it was a secret agency movie, while this exact thing was starting to roll out of Instagram...
Starring: David Duchovny, Demi Moore, Amber Heard, Benjamin Hollingsworth, Gary Cole

September 18th

9:00pm | Asterix & Obelix vs Caesar (1999) The Gauls are revolting! And they don't much like being ruled either. Luckily this small village, the last holdout from the Roman Empire's tax collecting fiendery, has a magic potion that imbues its village heroes, Asterix and Obelix, with the physical powers to repel the invading army. There's some surprising star power in this live action version of a classic french comic!
Starring: Gerard Depardieu, Christian Clavier, Roberto Benigni, Gottfried John

September 17th

9:00pm | Pyrates of the Kari-bean: Red Man's Best (2006) The second installment in our Don't tell the Mouse: Pyre Rats are Coming series! This one has Spack Jarrow getting hunted by a Flying Dutch Ghost Man cuz he owes a debt to Davey Jonze, and Fishface McGonnagal. Pretty Couple are here too, but they're gonna get hanged, so they have to join Spack and friends on the adventure. It's all there. You'll see. Great blockbuster fun doesn't get much better than this!
Starring: Rum Spack and the Pretty Couple, Fishface of the Ocean Ghosts, Nobel Villains and Swarthy Minions

September 16th

11:00pm | The Cell (2000) A psychologist able to use some experimental new technology is persuaded by the FBI to enter the mind of a comatose serial killer in order to find his latest victim. It's kinda like Silence of the Lambs... on a lot of acid. Visually beautiful, horrible, grotesque, and absolutely stunning dreamscape film whose imagery probably hasn't left you since seeing it 20 years ago. More a psychological thriller, but certainly not for the squeamish. It's the Friday Night Midnight Movie!!
Starring: Jennifer Lopez, Vince Vaughn, Vincent D'Onofrio

September 15th

9:00pm | Fright Night (2011) The spooky season is almost here, so we gotta slowly wade in! And sure I could play this remake on a Tuesday, but the original might be coming soon, and honestly this is pretty far removed besides the most basic story - I think my neighbor's a vampire. This one doesn't have quite the camp value, but it's not without its quirky tongue-in-cheekiness. Overall, atmospheric, spooky, vampire fun!
Starring: Anton Yelchin, Colin Farrell, David Tennant, Toni Collette, Imogen Poots, Chrstopher-Mintz-Plasse, Dave Franco

11:00pm Bonus Movie | Jennifer's Body (2009) Probably a satire of 90s teen horror, but the tone keeps shifting all over the place, and the dialog is such a weird mixture of actual slang and some sorta fictional teen language that you can never really get a grasp on what it's trying to do. And the soundtrack... oof! If it was supposed to be bad 90s emo rock, very good. Just, very very bad. My take - this one might be a cult classic, but needs another decade in the pot to simmer.
Starring: Megan Fox, Amanda Seyfried, Adam Brody, JKS

September 13th

9:00pm | 2 Fast 2 Furious (2003) Wasting no time getting to the playful sequel names, this followup has all the cars, fist fights, and Paul Walker you could want. But of course it's missing that key ingredient, Dom. And we all know Dom is what keeps the family together. However, as our righteous endeavor to watch a single damn series in order dictates, grab yourself any beer (as long as it's a Corona), and come have a good time!
Starring: Paul Walker, Tyrese, Eva Mendes, Luda, Devon Aoki

September 12th

9:00pm | Police Story (1985), Police Story 2 (1988), First Strike (1996) Martial Arts Monday! One of the quintessential action movies to come out of Hong Kong in the 80s, and what spread Jackie Chan's fame as the kickpunchinest action comedy stuntman to the world. You'll recognize some of the gags like the umbrella-bus scene, but this movie also has a fairly serious undertone as well. It has spawned a ton of sequels over the years, and still is I think. Oh yeah, and young Maggie Cheung in her first big role... ahem... AWOOOOGA ...with respect.
Starring: Jackie Chan, Brigitte Lin, Maggie Cheung

September 11th

9:00pm | Role Models (2008) Danny and Wheeler are grown-ass fuckups whose shenanigans land them with the choice of either jail or community service. They are assigned to be big brothers to a couple of kids they can't seem to connect with, one a LARPer and the other an obnoxious brat. This movie is absolutely hilarious! It's also David Wain, so crude as hell and not your mild comedy. Packs a nice feelgood story as well though, all around a very fun and funny flick with plenty of memorable one-liners!
Starring: Paul Rudd, Seann William Scott, Elizabeth Banks, Christopher Mintz-Plasse, Jane Lynch, Ken Marino, Ken Jeong, Joe Lo Truglio

September 10th

9:00pm | Oblivion (2013) So I've not seen this one yet, and apparently it's best viewed on the largest screens in existence, but we're gonna watch it on a tiny twitch screen, and if we're being honest, some of you absolute degens on mobile at that. No worries, it's not Lawrence of Arabia... It's not Lawrence of Arabia, right? I'm sure it'll be a fun blockbuster time, with Tom Cruise runnin' around post-apocalypse destroyed Earth fixing drones or something. He's got like a Halo gun and a cool space suit too, but I'm really expecting some running.
Starring: TC, Morgan Freeman, Andrea Riseborough, Olga Kurylenko

September 9th

11:00pm | Dark City (1998) A man who has lost his memory and is wanted for murder tries to piece together what is happening to him while being thrust into a strange and nightmarish city that is controlled and altered nightly by the mysterious alien-like Strangers. This noir/gothic/steampunk/thriller/sci-fi has just about anything you could ask for, including an intricate story and world-build that just keep on giving. It's the Friday Night Midnight Movie!!
Starring: Rufus Sewell, Kiefer Sutherland, Jennifer Connelly, William Hurt

September 8th

9:00pm | Rampage (2018) Whenever videogame-to-movie adaptations come up, I may have some hot takes like the new Mortal Kombat is awesome, and of course everyone knows the greatest of all is Super Mario Bros., but this one hardly ever gets a seat at the table! It truly is a great adaptation, and those familiar with the game may be like, "It's just giant monsters destroying buildings, there's like zero plot." Uhhh, yeah. And that's what this is, with maybe slightly more character development. It's a big giant blockbuster kaiju funtime, and it's perfect! Join for fun!
Starring: The Rock, Naomie Harris, Malin Akerman, Jeffrey Dean Morgan

September 6th

9:00pm | Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse (2018) This is where things start going off the meta rails I think. From the looks of the character list and John Mulaney playing "Spider-Ham" I'd guess we're in for a nice and easy, good fun, dimension-hopping time. Which is good cuz I'm exhausted!
Starring: Shameik Moore, Jake Johnson, Hailee Steinfeld, Lily Tomlin, Zoe Kravitz, Nic Cage, Chris Pine

September 5th

4:00pm | Hobbit 3: Armies Battle, LotR: Two Towers, LotR: Return of the King Day 2 of the LotR Marathon!! And I'm definitely not tired! Just starting a few hours late for funsies! We're on to the Battle of the Five Armies now that that talking Dragon is done talking. And if you're confused about the order we're going in, remember where you are and just be glad I haven't slipped a Spider-Man in there somewhere. How awesome was Smaug, right? Best damn cgi ever. Sure could talk though. Let's Gooooo!
Starring: Martin Freeman, Ian McKellen, Richard Armitage, Cate Blanchett, Ken Stott, Graham McTavish

September 4th

3:00pm | LotR: Fellowship, Hobbit 1: The Hobbiting, Hobbit 2: Talking Dragon It's here! The Lord of the Rings Marathon that nobody was asking for, but you're getting anyway! Come celebrate and enjoy some of the greatest stories ever told and the most epic films ever made! Join for for fun!
Starring: Elijah Wood, Ian McKellen, Martin Freeman, Orlando Bloom, Sean Bean, Sean Astin, a buncha dwarves

September 3rd

9:00pm | The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power (2022) No clue! Haven't even watched a trailer. It sure has a polarized review base on IMDB though! If I had to guess, this "taking place hundreds of years before the fellowship" would probably make this based on The Silmarillion, and if that's the case, I can see why it's a love it or hate it sorta affair. However! We're gonna watch these first two eps in preparation for the marathon tomorrow!! Let's find out together!
Starring: Morfydd Clark, Lenny Henry, Markella Kavenagh, Sara Zwangobani

September 2nd

11:00pm | Don't Breathe (2016) From the relatively new and unknown director of the fantastic Evil Dead remake is this taught and relentless thriller that doesn't let up from start to finish. Three low-life thieves break into a blind man's house to rob him of what they are sure is a massive fortune. But he isn't nearly the invalid the expect. This film uses light (and lack of it) ingeniously much like the Man does to create a clausterphobic maze of tension we have to find our way through on this Friday Night Midnight Movie!!
Starring: Stephen Lang, Jane Levy, Dylan Minnette, Daniel Zovatto, Emma Bercovici, Christian Zagia, Sergej Onopko

September 1st

9:00pm | The Conjuring (2013) "Paranormal investigators" Ed and Lorraine Warren "help" a family terrorized by demonic entities in their farmhouse. Here's the thing... I had to shut off a favorite podcast today interviewing one of the "survivors" of this "true story" because she's a total fraud and absolute huckster (the oldest daughter Andrea Perron), as are the known hack couple The Warrens. So that's as to the "true" nature of this tale. However, that's not to downplay how incredibly well-done and thoroughly creepy this movie is. It's a modern horror masterpiece that spun off an entire universe of passable to downright abysmal sequels. This one's the real deal... even if the "real" deal it's based on was from a swath of con artists and liars.
Starring: Patrick Wilson, Vera Farmiga, Ron Livingston, Lili Taylor, Joey King, Shanley Caswell, Mackenzie Foy
