October 30th

   5:45pm | The Nightmare Before Christmas (1993) | PG |
The stop motion classic from Tim Burton's Big Weird Brain to your hungry hungry eyeballs. For some reason this film still retains its goth teen angst following to this day, despite there being what I can only assume are a couple of Hot Topics left in the world. To each their own! Is this a Christmas movie or a Halloween movie? More importantly it's a really amazing and fun movie! Now where's my studded leather bracelet and pewter cross necklace? Gonna need those.
Starring: Danny Elfman, Chris Sarandon, Catherine O'Hara, William Hickey, Paul Reubens, Glenn Shadix

   7:00pm | Gremlins (1984) | PG |
Don't give them wet food after midnight! Or some really simple rules like that. Ya know, maybe the ancient chinese secret guy selling these little fuzzballs on the black market could've been a bit more descriptive about the consequences instead of just being all ominous. I dunno, whatever, gimme one! I don't care which evolution!
Starring: Zach Galligan, Phoebe Cates, Corey Feldman, Judge Reinhold

   8:45pm | Krampus (2015) | PG-13 |
This one is super fun, and I feel like not enough people know about it. A boy accidentally summons the Christmas demon which proceeds to terrorize his dysfunctional family. A bit too spooky for kids probably, but who knows, maybe they need to put in line a bit before the holidays, I'm not your life coach. Get on in here for some spooky Christmas fun!
Starring: Adam Scott, Toni Collette, David Koechner, Allison Tolman

October 29th

   10:30pm | Behind the Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon (2006) | R |
This movie is a truly incredible indie gem (and clearly not well-known enough by the lengths I went to to get my hands on a physical copy). It starts out novel enough, a documentary crew is following around an up-and-coming serial killer/movie villain. He talks about his routine and his life goals and whatnot, ya know they're just like us sorta thing. And just when you start to think, okay this is cute, some fun cameos, okay okay... wait... wait what? This movie is a real trip you will want to see again immediately! Badass indie filmmaking!
Starring: Nathan Baesel, Angela Goethals, Robert Englund, Zelda Rubinstein, Scott Wilson

   10:30pm | Tucker and Dale vs Evil (2010) | R |
I don't know about you, but this is one of my favorite horror-comedies! I feel like it really captures the essense of what it is to be Canadian. Two good-hearted hillfolk are just mindin' their own business, when these college kids just start killin' themselves all over their land! And if you don't know what I'm talking about, this is required viewing, my friend. A total blast!
Starring: Tyler Labine, Alan Tudyk, Katrina Bowden, Jesse Moss, Brandon Jay McLaren, Philip Granger

   12:00am | Dead Alive (1992) | R |
Last up on our Halloween Mega Saturday, we're gonna scoot on down to New Zealand for one of Peter Jackson's earliest. Yes that Peter Jackson. After his first two extremely indie horror-comedies Bad Taste and Meet the Feebles (which are great in their own right, but nothing to this), somebody decided to give him a reasonable budget to make a movie... which he promptly spent entirely on fake blood for this gore-taststic WTFery. I'm talking lawnmower on zombie action. Seriously, you have to see it to believe it. I think it set a record!
Starring: Timothy Balme, Diana Penalver, Elizabeth Moody

October 28th

   9:00pm | Planet Terror (2007) | R |
Welcome to Friday Night Midnight Grindhouse!! Our Robert Rodriguez double feature starts with this homage to 70s action exploitation films. It is waaayyy over-the-top, campy, gory, and oh so much fun! A goverment bio-weapon is released on the people, turning them into what will without a doubt be hotly debated in chat as some sort of zombie-like creatures. If you like attaching a chainsaw to your severed wrist, can I interest you in a machine gun leg? Don't miss this sleazy fun sendup that outdoes even the movies it was born out of!
Starring: Rose McGowan, Freddie Rodriguez, Josh Brolin, Marley Shelton, Michael Biehn

   11:30pm | From Dusk Till Dawn (1996) | R |
Time to go south of the border to the infamous Titty Twister, a cantina harboring the most wretched hive of scum and villainy. Where our... heroes(?) have to meet up with their associate after a crime spree in America. But first they have to survive the night! While locked in the bar, things take a sudden turn for the... demonic. And I do mean sudden. Hilarious. Horrific. Insane and intense through and through! And now let's kill that fucking band..
Starring: Cloondog, QT, Harvey Keitel, Juliette Lewis, Ernest Liu, Salma Hayek, Cheech, Trejo, Savini

October 27th

   9:00pm | A Quiet Place (2018) | PG-13 |
Scary apocalypse monsters hear good. Why say lot word when few do trick?
*(Shushing allowed.)
Starring: Emily B, John K, Girl, Boy

   10:30pm | A Quiet Place: Part II (2020) | PG-13 |
A very worthy sequel with a little more action-oriented thrills. John K returns to write, direct, and produce. I really hope he does more of these things, not that he's bad at looking knowingly at the camera or suddenly being a military action star or anything. He's just also really good at everything else too.
Starring: Emily Blunt, Millicent Simmonds, Cillian Murphy, John Krasinski

October 26th

   9:00pm | Pontypool (2009) | R |
Tonight we're exploring how other countries use creative means of dealing with monsters! But not like super-duper foreign, just like foreign-light. This is a Canadian film that is so atmospheric and creepily well done, you hardly notice that it's practically a single set radio play. In fact, that's part of what it actually is, a modern take on the infamous Orson Welles' disaster performance piece War of the Worlds. We are trapped in a radio station with the on-air host walking us through a zombie invasion taking place outside, while he and his callers gradually figure out what's going on and how to deal with it. Simply a masterpiece of horror writing and suspense. This WILL be a new favorite of yours. It's Grifter's mandate!!
Starring: Stephen McHattie, Lisa Houle, Georgina Reilly, Hrant Alianak, Daniel Fathers

   10:30pm | Grabbers (2012) | NR |
Moving across the pond for our second movie, we have a brilliant, underrated Irish creature feature about some bloodsucking aliens attacking a small fishing island. As much as this film is obviously an homage to classic B monster movies, it's also a well-written and funny original take. How are these lowly Irishmen going to deal with these fookin ETs? Drinking of course! Cheers!
Starring: Killian Coyle, Stuart Graham, Michael Hough, Ruth Bradley, Richard Coyle

October 25th

   10:00pm | Evil Dead (2013) | R |
On to part 3 of our demon docu-series! This is a actually a remake of The Evil Dead/Evil Dead II: Dead by Dawn, the remake of The Evil Dead. This is Evil Dead. Not to be confused with Evil Dead Trap, a Japanese gross out movie from the 80s that has nothing to do with this series whatsoever. Everyone with me? Good, cuz this might be the best horror remake of all time, in league with Cronenberg's The Fly and the live action Cats. Eschewing nearly all aspects of the campy humor of Raimi's movies, this instead goes full-tilt horror. And man does it deliver! A modern horror masterpiece worthy of its place in our countdown!
Starring: Jane Levy, Shiloh Fernandez, Jessica Lucas, Lou Taylor Pucci, Elizabeth Blackmore

   11:45pm | Army of Darkness (1992) | R |
We've arrived my friends! It is time. Time... hehehe. It's time we get sucked into a portal while at our job as a grocery store clerk to be transported into a medieval alternate dimension where deadites and re-animated skeletons and gremliln Bruce Campbells are all trying to kill our hero Ash who somehow finds time for love while retrieving the Necronomicon and saving the living from the dead. Sooooo... if you haven't seen this, yeah you might wanna start fixing that now. And of course if you have, you already know it's required viewing. Letsfuckingoooooo!!!
Starring: Bruce Campbell, Embeth Davidtz, Marcus Gilbert, Bridget Fonda, Bill Moseley

October 24th

   10:00pm | Triangle (2009) | R |
Welcome back Maritime Arts Monday!! An absolute banger out of Australia, this terrifying mystery plays out entirely on a boat (well, two boats) with a small cast of characters and a very unique premise. I won't go too into it, cuz it's definitely worth the watch cold. But trust me, this little film packs a big punch!
Starring: Melissa George, Michael Dorman, Liam Hemsworth, Emma Lung

   11:45pm | Ghost Ship (2002) | R |
Some films are like Triangle, where they're a mystery right down to the title. And then there's ones like Ghost Ship... I mean, sometimes you get exactly what you order. What do you want? It's a friggin' ghost ship, bruh. It's got a young Emily Browning doing a very good spooky ghost girl, impressive sets and cinematography, and a genuine claustrophobic atmosphere. Good ol' fashioned ghost story!
Starring: Julianna Margulies, Gabriel Byrne, Emily Browning, Karl Urban

October 23rd

   9:30pm | Anna and the Apocalypse (2018) | R |
It's the all-singing, all-dancing, zombie Christmas movie you never knew you needed! Some of you are gonna groan about musicals, but I can assure you this is an amazing indie romp that couldn't have achieved its cheesy greatness without some song and dance. Genuinely good musical numbers alongside surprsingly well-done gore combine to make this a one a weird, fun, one of a kind experience!
Starring: Ella Hunt, Malcolm Cumming, Sarah Swire

   11:00pm | Zombieland (2009) | R |
This modern classic gets everything right. It's got heart, laughs, great characters, Woody wiping his tears with stacks of money, Bill Murray playing Bill Murray, and plenty of fun zombie kills! It's a short and sweet big-budget buddy roadtrip hollywood zombie spectacular. No singing, promise.
Starring: Jesse Eisenberg, Emma Stone, Woody Harrelson, Abigail Breslin, Bill Motherfuckin Murray

October 22nd

   9:30pm | 28 Days Later (2002) | R |
Zombiiieesss! I've held back so far on zombies, but it's about time we address them proper. This is the progenitor of the modern "fast zombie", and it made them terrifying again! It's a really amazing film overall about the way our society would react to a spreading virus and how we would treat each other...hmmm... The striking shots of a completely desolate and abandoned downtown metropolis were also a shocking first...hmmm... Lemme just be clear, this is a work of fiction. Nothing like this could ever happen...
Starring: Cillian Murphy, Naomie Harris, Christopher Eccleston, Brendan Gleeson

   11:30pm | 28 Weeks Later (2007) | R |
In this formidable followup, Danny Boyle doesn't return to direct, but I'm pretty sure he got his little fingies all up in production, cuz this is a solid flick as well. Part III is still a rumor, so we'll see about that. It's now six months after outbreak and time to start repopulating Britain! You heard 'em folks! Masks off, it's time to start going to concerts and crowded sporting events again! Or ya know, a small US-controlled containment site at least.
Starring: Jeremy Renner, Rose Byrne, Robert Carlyle, Harold Perrineau, Catherine McCormack, Idris Elba

October 21st

   10:00pm | Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark (2019) | PG-13 |
Directed by André Øvredal of Troll Hunter (a phenomenal Norwegian film) fame, and backed by the hand of Guillermo del Toro, I expect this to be pretty atmospheric. But it's also based on a Goosebumps-like book series for kids, so probably family-friendly-ish. I dunno, might be a hard mash to make work! It's about a somewhat tied together episodic bunch of stories about some teens dealing with creepy spooky things. So anthology adjacent. Whatever, you get the theme tonight.
Starring: Zoe Margaret Colletti, Michael Garza, Gabriel Rush, Austin Abrams, They're Minerals Marie

   11:30pm | Trick 'r Treat (2009) | R |
Hands down my favorite horror anthology movie! It's funny, it's gruesome, it has a well-done through line connecting all the stories, and there isn't just one that's worth watching, they're all bangers. Absolutely a modern Halloween classic! It's the Friday Night Midnight Movie!!
Starring: Anna Paquin, Brian Cox, Dylan Baker, Rochelle Aytes, Quinn Lord

October 20th

9:00pm | Blade (1998) | R | Blade is half-vamp, half-human. He is here to save the rest of us pitiful normies from the vampire menace. Equally important is looking really fucking cool while doing it. And in case you don't know how serious he is about this, I've gone ahead and linked New Order's "Confusion" to the right --> . It should only take about two notes to transport you directly to a 90s rave where Wesley Snipes is about to Blade murder a shit-ton of vampires while blood rains down from above. Should you be there for the best character intro/opening scene ever? I dunno, hit play and tell me.
Starring: Wesley Snipes, Stephen Dorff, Kris Kristofferson, N/Bushe Wright, Donal Logue

11:00pm | Blade II (2002) | R | Not just a worthy successor, but easily rivals the first both in terms of action scenes and set pieces. People just keep popping up too! When you're like, "wait was that just Ip Man?" and he's like 7th billed you know things are going well for your movie. Highly recommend if you like Blade or just great vamp action and humans turning on humans and turning into vampires and such.
Starring: Wesley Snipes, Kris Kristofferson, Ron Perlman, Leonor Varela, Norman Reedus, Donnie Yen

1:00am | Blade: Trinity (2004) | R | Everybody shittin' on this one, but not even a bad movie by any means. Well, unless those means are comparing it to the first two, then yeah there's some legitimate criticism. A little heavy on the standard action like car chase scenes and stuff, and a little light on the Blade and general vampire stuff, and possibly the origin of Deadpool? I dunno, this one is where Marvel took over and RR is definitely playing the character. Anyway, taken by itself, an entirely okay action movie!
Starring: Wesley Snipes, Kris Kristofferson, Parker Posey, Ryan Reynolds, Jessica Biel

October 19th

11:00pm | Coraline (2009) | PG | As much as I love Evil Deadses, let's take it a bit lighter tonight. This stop-motion animation from Henry Selick is about a girl who kinda narnias herself away from her parents who she feels don't pay enough attention to her, into a fantasy world where things may not be quite as ideal as they seem. Despite the family-friendly rating and animation, just know that this is based on a Neil Gaiman novel, so there's definitely some serious spooky undertones. And buttons.
Starring: Dakota Fanning, Teri Hatcher, John Hodgman, Keith David

October 18th

9:00pm | The Evil Dead (1981) | NC-17 | The Original! The movie that gave us probably the best duo in indie filmmaking history with Sam Raimi and Bruce Campbell! It's disgusting! It's terrifying! It's, well it's low-budget. But it can also be fun to see some of the creative ways Raimi found to skirt around having no money, sometimes leading to iconic shots and personal trademarks. Don't miss the start of this cult classic series!
Starring: Bruce Campbell, Ellen Sandweiss, Betsy Baker, Theresa Tilly, Richard DeManincor

10:30pm | Evil Dead II (1987) | R | Not exactly a sequel, more like a remake of the original with a bigger budget, an R rating, and a lot more signature humor. Don't get it twisted though, this is still a bloody disgusting gorefest with demons in the floor, tree rape, hacked off limbs, you name it. One of the best horror movies ever made!
Starring: Bruce Campbell, Sarah Berry, Dan Hicks, Kassie Wesley DePaiva, Ted Raimi, Denise Bixler

October 17th

9:30pm | Sphere (1998) | PG-13 | Batten your hatches and mind the boom, cuz it's Maritime Monday!! Actually we're gonna go under the water, deep under, where science guys have found an alien craft that simply must be explored. This movie is a bit of a puzzler. A flop at the box office despite a huge budget, a talented director, big name cast, and Crichton novel. Most detractors agree it was unfortunately cast, with some actors wandering through it aimlessly and others seemingly unable to pronounce the word "sphere". Personally I think if you watch it with the understanding that it's just a really big production B-movie, it can be entertaining and at times pretty spooky!
Starring: Dustin Hoffman, Sharon Stone, Sam Jackson, Peter Coyote, Liev Schreiber, Queen Latifah, Huey Lewis

October 16th

10:00pm | Goosebumps (2015) | PG | Jack Black plays the reclusive author R.L. Stine, but when his manuscripts get loose, the monsters within start wreaking havoc all over town, and he has to team up with his daughter and a local teen to get them back on the page where they belong. This has some old favorites from the show you'll recognize like Slappy the puppet, but it also brings a fun and original light-spook story in the Goosebumpiverse!
Starring: Jack Black, Dylan Minnette, Odeya Rush, Ryan Lee, Jillian Bell, Ken Marino

12:00am Bonus Movie! | The Boy (2016) | PG-13 | Not entirely a bad movie, but certainly not anything special or memorable, and teetering way too close to the Hallmark Horror genre that I loathe. So if anybody cares to let me in on the big deal about this one, feel free to put me in line and explain what I'm missing. Until then, big meh.
Starring: Lauren Cohan, Rupert Evans, James Russell

October 15th

10:00pm | Jaws (1975) | R | Considered one of the best horror films of all time, here we have another PG Speilberg (hmmm, seems like this fella was sorta connected to be getting these ratings) about a large fish attacking people in its natural habitat. You know what... I never really thought about it, but Jaws is the real victim in this. I mean, don't be a dumb hairless seal in the open ocean, pretty easy really. This movie isn't about gore or even very good effects, it's really a masterclass in tension building and the onset and effects of mass hysteria. Truly a classic that still holds up! But also JUSTICE FOR JAWS!!
Starring: Roy Scheider, Richard Dreyfuss, Lorraine Gary, Robert Shaw

12:00am | Deep Blue Sea (1999) | R | Researchers on an ocean science barge are hacking shark brains to make a cure for Alzheimer's Disease. And LL Cool J is a chef with a parrot. And Sam Jackson has a very motivational speech. And it's pretty much as awesome as it sounds.
Starring: Thomas Jane, Saffron Burrows, LL Cool J, Michael Rapaport, Samuel L. Jackson

October 14th

11:00pm | Cult of Chucky (2017) | R | Personally I like the series more as it went on. I think when Don Mancini took over directing he was still a bit inexperienced in the chair, so Seed was a bit rough, but once he got his footing they've only gotten better. And all the main players are back, the Dourifs, Tilly, and even little Andy from the original! (No word on if he learned how to act since.) It's your favorite serial killer in the body of a My Buddy and mine! It's got the occult! It's got a cult! It's the Friday Night Midnight Movie!
Starring: Fiona Dourif, Alex Vincent, Brad Dourif, Allison Dawn Doiron, Jennifer Tilly

October 12th

10:00pm | Silent Hill (2006) | R | There's a plot to this I'm sure, but I can never really remember it, something about a woman trying to find her adopted daughter. But to be honest it really plays out a LOT like a video game where it's just sorta one spooky set piece after another with some bosses. But honestly, it doesn't bother me one bit, cuz this bad boy brings the spooks! I mean it. This is one downright scary movie with amazing production design, costumes, and SFX. If you really wanna follow the story I imagine you've already played the game anyway. Join for the imagery... stay cuz you now can't sleep!
Starring: Radha Mitchell, Laurie Holden, Sean Bean, Alice Krige, Jodelle Ferland

October 11th

10:00pm | Doctor Sleep (2019) | R | Dan Torrance has plenty of personal demons he's already fighting from his youth. He's found a place at a nursing home providing comfort to those about to pass using his abilities. But there are others out there like him. And a cult called The True Knot that preys upon children with the gift to feed their own kind's immortality. Mike Flanagan is one of the only horror directors today up to this monumental task and legacy of film. And he makes use of every single shot. It's a beautifully spooky movie!
Starring: Ewan McGregor, Rebecca Ferguson, Kyligh Curran, Emily Alyn Lind

October 10th

9:00pm | Corpse Bride (2005) | PG | Delightful stop motion animated film from Tim Burton is perfect for Marital Arts Monday! A soon-to-be groom accidentally raises a woman from the dead who thinks he was talking to her when practicing his vows. Sheeesh. Who hasn't been there, right? Family-friendly fun with top tier animation!
Starring: Johnny Depp, HBC, Emily Watson, Tracey Ullman, Christopher Lee

10:30pm | Pet Sematary (1989) | R | Look I know we've been over this before, but don't bury your pets in ancient burial grounds. Okay? Just don't. You know what else we probably shouldn't need to discuss but it's gonna come up? Maybe think about a fence when you live next to a highway and have a toddler. Oh... and also, well you know.
Starring: Dale Midkiff, Denise Crosby, Miko Hughes

October 9th

11:00pm | Scream (1996) | R | Bit of a midnight movie tonight! You know, I just recently even learned they made a remake/reboot/another sequel that might as well be a remake/whatever it is they're doing. Anyway they gave it the same name as the original, but then are in post-prod on a Scream 6... So yeah, don't ask me to explain the order or logic of this series, it's like they learned it from me or something. Well this is the original and still the best! A meta movie that's so self-aware, I'm pretty sure that it is actually reproducing itself at this point! Starring Drew Barrymore.
Starring: Drew Barrymore, Neve Campbell, Courtney Cox, David Arquette, Skeet Ulrich, Matthew Lillard

1:00am | The Dead Zone (1983) | R | An ordinary guy wakes from a coma with psychic abilities that begin to cause more harm than good. This is probably the least Cronenbergian Cronenberg movie there is, and also surprising is the subtle and restrained Walken performance. Seriously if I just told you those two were involved in making a Stephen King adaptation you'd expect the most far out wacky movie imaginable, but what you get is a rather heartfelt and tragic character study with a few grisly death scenes. Definitely a good movie, just unexpected!
Starring: Christopher Walken, Brooke Adams, Tom Skerritt, Martin Sheen

October 8th

9:00pm | Silver Bullet (1985) | R | This isn't PG, and inlcudes a decent amount of 80s practical gore effects, but it's also not without a good bit of camp. Busey, for whatever recent bullshit he's been up to, has always been batshit, and that's on full display here. Corey Haim is a kid in a suped-up wheelchair trying to solve the town mystery of who's doin' all the brutal murderin'. He thinks it's a werewolf. I do too. It's a fun, at times gross, and somehow a bit wholesome good time!
Starring: Corey Haim, Megan Follows, Gary Busey, Everett McGill, Terry O'Quinn

10:30pm | Underworld (2003) | R | This is the first of the Big Box Hollywood Vamps vs. Werewolves that spun off a few fairly decent sequels, but also was probably at least partially responsible for the same theme in terrible YA movies that spiraled out of control until we were left with nothing but toothless, twinkling teen heartthrobs stinking up the genre over the past decade. At least this one is pretty gritty though, has some great action, and a decent bit of world building. And it's more or less just Kate Beckinsale jumping around in black leather for two hours... sooooo I consider that a plus as well!
Starring: Kate Bechinsale, Scott Speedman, Shane Brolly, Michael Sheen, Bill Nighy

1:00am | Underworld: Rise of the Lycans (2009) | R | To cap off our night of Full Moon Fun, here we have the origin story of the vamp/wolf war as scene in flashbacks in the last film. Well, the first film.. we didn't watch the last one cuz of course we didn't. I was kinda lost cuz I thought Rhona Mitra actually was Kate Beckinsale for most of the movie, but luckily they spent almost the whole damn thing lore-dumping, only to be saved by a frankly pretty epic battle scene at the end with some great werewolf SFX! Overall, meh, I'd watch the battle again.
Starring: Rhona Mitra, Michael Sheen, Bill Nighy, Kevin Grevioux

October 7th

9:00pm | Killer Klowns from Outer Space (1988) | PG-13 | There's not much to say here. It is exactly what it sounds like. What do you want from me? After this lures you in with a false sense of light-hearted fun, and promises of silly circus follies, it gets real weird and you kinda wanna just go home and try to forget about it, but you never really know when this show is gonna come around again, so you just eat more trash and keep watching the next act... It's Grifter's redeem!
Starring: Grant Cramer, Suzanne Snyder, John Vernon, Royal Dano, Christopher Titus

10:30pm | It (2017) | R | There's no shortage of people like us who were scarred for life by the original mini-series with Tim Curry as Pennywise the Clown. It was (at least the first part and despite what Stephen King thought) a very very creepy rendition of one of the scariest books ever. 27 years later (that's right 27 on the dot, not that that is significant...hehehe) this version is hopefully and rightfully scaring the piss out of a new generation. Cuz this movie is horror done right. A lot of the success is due to Skarsgard's Pennywise, which is astonishingly unsettling. There's also decent teen acting, solid direction, and super creepy special and practical effects. This is horror cinema! Just don't expect to sleep well after..
Starring: Bill Skarsgard, Jaeden Martell, Finn Wolfhard, Sophia Lillis, Jeremy Ray Taylor, Chosen Jacobs, Nicholas Hamilton

October 5th

8:30pm | Monster House (2006) | PG | Some neighborhood kids do the usual kid thing of assigning one particular house on the block as haunted, and you should never go there of course cuz it'll eat ya or the old lady that lives there is a witch and she'll eat ya, or other such kid stuffs. We all did the same. But this time... they're right! Really funny family-friendly offering written by Dan Harmon has a lot of star power, great animation, and wholesome spooks for all!
Starring: Mitchel Musso, Sam Lerner, Spencer Locke, Steve Buscemi, Catherine O'Hare, Fred Willard, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Jon Heder

10:15pm | Poltergeist (1982) | PG | That's right, PG. But I sure as hell ain't giving this one the PG Spook tag, cuz it's scarier than most gore fests and psycho killer movies out there. There's a reason for that and it's mostly because this is Steven Spielberg doing horror. He's only credited with writing, but most Hollywood insider info says he was pretty much directing as well, even though that credit goes to Tobe Hooper. Who, for my money is hit or miss in his career, but he's no slouch either. This is the original ghost story, strap in boyos... ThEy'Re hEre!
Starring: Craig T. Nelson, JoBeth Williams, Heather O'Rourke, Zelda Rubinstein

12:15am Bonus Movie | The Amityville Horror (2005) | R | Remake of the rather boring 70s horror movie about the supposed real-life haunting, well, it was a real-life crime, but I dunno about the haunting part. It's superior in every way to the original and all its wack sequels. But maybe that's just RR's abs clouding my vision. No it really is. Oh, and this one's decidedly NOT PG!
Starring: Ryan Reynolds, Melissa George, Jesse James, Chloe Grace Moretz, Philip Baker Hall

October 4th

9:00pm | The Ring (2002) | R | This is a rare occurrence of an American version actually being better than its foreign original. Whereas the Japanese version is a good film, it has a somewhat muted palette and muddled storyline that are greatly improved upon under the expert direction of Gore Verbinski. The lore is much clearer and well thought-out. You know the story, it's a tale as old as chain emails, and it easily spawned as many knockoffs and wannabees as there are scam spams in your AOL inbox today! I promise you though, this is still one of the creepiest movies ever made. Clear your schedule for the week!
Starring: Naomi Watts, Martin Henderson, Brian Cox, Daveigh Chase

11:00pm Bonus Movie | Resident Evil (2002) | R | The videogame movie adaptation that let everyone know, "Hey maybe videogame movies don't have to be absolute crap!" Actually really faithful to the game, full of awesome action set pieces, a zombie storyline that makes a bunch of sense, and of course Milla Jovovich running around in tissue paper again. It's like that's something that does it for me.
Starring: Milla Jovovich, Michelle Rodriguez, Eric Mabius

October 3rd

9:00pm | Ready or Not (2019) | R | Marital Arts Monday makes a surprise appearance in HHN! I feel like this is one of the best original horror movies in at least the last decade, and not enough gets said about it. It's funny, it's scary, it's twisty! All I can really say is that when a bride meets her new family and in-laws, the night takes an unexpected turn as they play a traditional family game! Be there for this modern cult classic!
Starring: Samara Weaving, Adam Brody, Mark O'Brien, Henry Czerny, Andie MacDowell, Melanie Scrofano

October 2nd

8:30pm | Monsters, Inc. (2001) | PG | Monsters power the city through the screams of children (yes, this is the family-friendly movie tonight), but the kids are toxic to monsters who are just doing their job. However, when one girl gets into the monster world two monster friends find out not all is what it would seem. Heartfelt, amazing animation, great star-power voice acting!
Starring: Billy Crystal, John Goodman, Mary Gibbs, Steve Buscemi, John Ratzenberger, Jennifer Tilly, James Coburn

10:00pm | Cabin in the Woods (2011) | R | This is also one of my favorite movies ever! A movie within a movie about horror tropes being how we control the real world using horror tropes, which is flipped on itself and then folded over and over like how you hand-make puff pastry. It's the meta-ist of movies, and it actually ends up making sense somehow being so well-done. Also scary! And funny! It really has it all.
Starring: Chris Hemsworth, Kristen Connolly, Anna Hutchison, Fran Kranz, Richard Jenkins, Bradley Whitford

October 1st

9:00pm | Hocus Pocus (1993) | PG | The perfect family-friendly movie to kickoff the season! And I just learned about the sequel coming out! Obviously no mice allowed for this one. Shhhhhh. And not just cuz there's talking cats in this one! A family moves to Salem during Halloween time and teen son Max "Hollywood" struggles to fit in. Then there's witches, and a zombie, and a binx the cat, and yabbos, and a never-ending party... It's just the best. Bring the family and celebrate the beginning of Spooktober!
Starring: Bette Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker, Kathy Najimy, Omri Katz, Thora Birch,, Vinessa Shaw

10:30pm | Slither (2006) | R | Now make sure those kids are in bed! Cuz it's time for Halloween Horror Nights to begin! This is one of my favorite movies of all time! It's funny, disgusting, downright scary at times, and it pays homage to so many great horror movies throughout. Simply the best! Join for fun and creepy crawlies!
Starring: Nathan Fillion, Elizabeth Banks, Michael Rooker
