9:00pm | The Taking of Pelham 1 2 3 (2009)
This Tony Scott remake of the 70s classic has been on the list for a while, so when I heard some dudes on a podcast today talking about the Tony Scott train movie that is basically just Denzel sitting down the whole time, I assumed they just got the title wrong with Unstoppable. But it turns out no! Not only did Tony Scott do two movies in two years about subway trains, they both starred Denzel mostly sitting around! Crazy. I guess if it ain't broke... Anyway, he's great, our boy Johntra's in it, they're great, it'll be great!
Starring: Denzel, Johntra, Luis Guzman, John Turturro, James Gandolfini

9:00pm | Across the Universe (2007)
Let's clear this up, we don't hate musicals here anymore (we used to, but too many exceptions make a new rule), we just hate all the musicals that musicals-people love. Or something like that. Anyway, throw this one in the exceptions drawer cuz I absolutely love it, and you will too! It's an odd premise, as Julie Taymor repurposes The Beatles' catalogue to tell a romance narrative with some elements of history and interdimensionalism through song and dance. If that sounds too trippy for you already, probably don't smoke the friggin asian carp of joints that I'm going to before enjoying this master class in music covering.
Starring: Evan Rachel Wood, Jim Sturgess

9:00pm | Fast Times at Ridgemont High (1982)
Written by a young Cameron Crowe and directed by a young Amy Heckerling, this movie paved the way for pretty much any and all comedy you can think of after it. It really is a pivotal film, at least in terms of blue teen comedy. And when you think about it, if you're here and I'm here, then doesn't that make it our time to spend catching waves and great movies? Just remember to knock. And is Forest Whitaker gonna be a Sunday thing?
Starring: Sean Penn, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Judge Reinhold, Phoebe Cates' Knockers, Forest Whitaker, Eric Stoltz

9:00pm | Moneyball (2011)
After quite a bit of shuffling around between big producers and studios with re-writes and whatnot, this movie surprisingly didn't come out a mess. In fact, it's amazing, definitely due to the Sorkin script, but also the casual bromance between Pitt and Hill. Baseball has always been obsessive about stats, but until the 2002 Oakland A's, stats were never put to their true potential by finally switching to Windows XP. Join for Statistics, Economics, Corporate Politics, you know... everything BUT Baseball!
Starring: Brad Pitt, Jonah Hill, Phil Hoffman, Robin Wright, Chris Pratt

9:00pm | Romeo + Juliet (1996)
Hoo boy, where to start with this one... Well, it established for me the idea that Shakespeare can actually make sense when you give it proper visual context, had the absolute bangin-est soundtrack that still holds up, shaped a lot of what I know can be possible in film, and uhhhh, shaped some other very teenage feelings that totally don't come back when seeing these two on screen. Maybe some folks will wanna fight me, but this is one of the greatest movies ever made. Baz creates a completely modern retelling using the actual dialog; it's unlike anything else ever put to film. Bite your thumb at me all you want!
Starring: Leo DiCaprio, Claire Danes, John Leguizamo, Harold Perrineau, Pete Postlethwaite, Paul Sorvino, Paul Rudd, Brian Dennehy

9:00pm | Predators (2010)
Robert Rodriguez produced this newest of the franchise with an an all-star cast and you better believe it... plural Predators! A group of disgraced killers and mercenaries and such are air-dropped into Predator land for the purpose of, well I'm not really sure. Are they there to try and wipe out the alien menance on its home turf? Or is there a more sinister reason for this little jungle jaunt?
Starring: Adrien Brody, Laurence Fishburne, Topher Grace, Alice Braga, Walton Goggins, Danny Trejo, Brian Steele

9:00pm | Convoy (1978)
The first (and only?) big budget western film based on a novelty pop-country song, directed by Sam Peckinpah! There's a bit of touching on some deeper problems with the country in this that are of course as relevant today, but it really is ultimately just an ode to the American West and to the trucking culture of the second half of the 20th century as modern cowboys. Sure it ain't Stagecoach, but come on, for a movie based on a silly song, it's pretty damn fun! And that's a big 10-4, good buddy.
Starring: Kris Kristofferson, Ali MacGraw, Ernest Borgnine

9:00pm | Phone Booth (2002)
Short and sweet Sunday suspense! Member phone booths? Joel Schumacher should, since this is his best movie (not that that's a hard podium to reach). Colin Farrell is scared to leave the titular and almost only setting in this thriller about a sniper with questionable motivations trapping the beautiful irishman in a glass case for all eternity and eventually adding him to the Shelf of Forbidden Wonders in my secret basement some supervillain lair somewhere probably...
Starring: Colin Farrell, Kiefer Sutherland, Forest Whitaker, Radha Mitchell, Katie Holmes

9:00pm | Apollo 13 (1995)
Ron Howard's experiment in heart-attacking an entire movie-going populace is one of the best films of the 90s. It's a trove of tension, drama, heartbreak, and technical triumph. And I'm not even talking about the true story behind the film! Absolutely a must see space action blockbuster of the finest order, but don't forget your lorazepam and tissues for the inevitable waterworks. Houston, we have a problem with my eyes...
Starring: Hanks, Paxton, Bacon, Sinise, Harris

9:00pm | Defendor (2009)
There was a real rash of sorta indie vigilantism movies around this time, and frankly a lot of good ones came out of it! But I've never heard of this one starring Woody. As far as I can tell it's the usual story line of regularly guy taking on a superhero nightlife and falling for Kat Dennings. Why isn't J.K. Simmons in this you ask? No clue, but I've already written a strongly worded letter to the studio.
Starring: Woody Harrelson, Kat Dennings, Sandra Oh, Elias Koteas

9:00pm | 2:22 (2017)
Pretty polar reviews on this one. Seems to be you either love it or hate it so let's check it out! Looks like some exploration of synchronicities, some Sci-Fa mysteryishness, and definitely some timey-wimey nonsense. Will they have their ozzie accents, or try to pass as Americans? Does time move backward down there like the water? Do they refer to winter as "summer" or when they say "summer" does it just imply cold? These questions and surely more will not be answered in tonight's movie!
Starring: Daario, Teresa Palmer, Sam Reid

9:00pm | A Night at the Roxbury (1998)
Music Monday welcomes the Butabi Brothers into our esteemed VIP lounge! This actually maintains a pretty healthy cult following as one of the better late 90s comedies. It isn't just a plastic club scene nostalgia trip and better than most SNL skit-to-movie adaptations, but has some great (albeit idiotic) character and slapstick work from the two leads who would later go on to great success... and being Chris Kattan, respectively.
Starring: Will Ferrell, Chris Kattan, Molly Shannon, Richard Greico, Dan Hedaya, Loni Anderson

9:00pm | Jaws (1975)
Alright, after all the sequels and all the pain and suffering I made old-hats go through with the terrible shark movies on friday nights, it's finally here! THE shark movie! Yay! I promise I'm not gonna hype up this early Spielberg masterpiece just for you to click the link and it be Santa Jaws 2: Uncaged the Reckoning! really... seriously... go ahead, click the link...
Starring: Roy Schieder, Richard Dreyfuss, Robert Shaw Lorraine Gary

9:00pm | Jennifer's Body (2009)
I never got around to seeing this apparently severely mismarketed movie written by Diablo Cody. It's actually supposed to be a teen horror drama satire, but PR went with true horror. So we'll go in with dry comedy expectations and see how it goes as intended. Also Megan Fox was being shit on a lot around then, so probably contributed to the bad press. On the bright side, not only are we seeing the triumphant return of J.K. Simmons, we get a little bonus J.J. Simmons as well!
Starring: Megan Fox, Adam Brody, Chris Pratt, J.K. and J.J. (Unrelated) Simmons

9:00pm | Evangelion: 1.11 You Are (Not) Alone. (2007)
Introducing this series into the Two 4 Tuesday lineup was easy since they seem to have as much of an understanding of how numbers work as I do. 1.11 and 2.22 are sorta director's cuts of 1.0 and 2.0, and then 3.0+1.01 is the just-released conclusion to the entire saga... and there might be a fourth one in there somewhere, so yeah, typical Tuesday 'round here. Familiarity with the highly acclaimed original series is not a requirement to enjoy big-ass mechs duking it out with alien kaijus in future world Tokyo-3. Both subs and dubs are available for all you degens.
Starring: Megumi Ogata, Megumi Hayashibara, Kotono Mitsuishi

9:00pm | Ondine (2009)
Colin Farrell plays a fisherman who reels in an unexpected catch in this Neil Jordan Fantasy/Suspense/Romance modern fairytale. You know, there sure have been a lot of really big budget water-people movies in the last decade or so. Just a guess based on my biased director profiling, but I'm gonna place this squarely between Lady in the Water and The Shape of Water. But what about The Lighthouse 'mermaid'? ....*shudders*.
Starring: Colin Farrell, Alicja Bachleda, Alison Barry

9:00pm | Armageddon (1998)
Well, I promised to get us out of the 80s, but could only muster the thrusters to get up to '98. But dammit if we're not gonna watch the second-best Hollywood blockbuster world disaster movie of 1998!! Literally the Amazon description: "A large asteroid is heading directly toward Earth."
Aaaaand this is my floor, Mr. Bay, take it away!
Starring: Bruce Willis, Billy Bob, Afflack, Buscemi, MCD, Owen Wehhhhowwww Wilson, The Worst Song That Is Already Stuck in Your Head
Sep 2nd
9:00pm | Predator (1987)
Welp, why not? Seems like a logically place to put this. Lauded by many men of my age and shape as the greatest action movie of all time! It spawned many sequels, one which we watched a couple weeks ago. It's peak Arnie and John McTiernan. It's a damn fine film with some shitty-ass CG coming in hot from the 1987 gang (only backseat to the '99 squad), so strap up and strap in for extraterrestrial warrior murder time!
Starring: Arnold Schwarzenegger, Carl Weathers, Jesse Ventura, Bill Duke, Kevin Peter Hall
